Ghana – Turkey Relations

Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Ghana were established in 1958 following the
independence of Ghana. The Turkish Embassy in Accra was first opened in 1964 but closed due
to austerity measures in 1981. It was subsequently reopened on 1 st February 2010.  The Embassy
of the Republic of Ghana was opened in Ankara in 2012.

The Presidential visits made by H.E. Mr. Abdullah Gül, President of the Republic of Türkiye, to
Ghana, from 23 rd to 24 th March 2011 and the reciprocal visit by H.E. John Dramani Mahama,
President of the Republic of Ghana, to Türkiye from 21 st to 24 th January 2013, deepened bilateral
relations between the two countries.

H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Ghana from 29 th February to 1 st March 2016
created a new milestone in the bilateral relations. During that visit, a Business Forum was held
with the participation of approximately 150 Turkish businessmen and their Ghanaian
counterparts. Following that visit, other Government officials, including the former Minister of
Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Hon. Alan Kyeremanten, visited Türkiye to participate in a
business forum. Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, former Minister for Foreign Affairs of the
Republic of Ghana, also paid an official visit to Türkiye from 11 th to 14 th January, 2020.

Since the establishment of bilateral relations, Ghana and Türkiye have continued to deepen their
cooperation in various areas and sectors of mutual interest, including trade and investment, as
well as education. Several bilateral agreements have also been signed to enhance commercial and
economic ties between the two countries.

The balance of Trade (BoT) between the two countries has been in favour of Türkiye. However,
the annual trade volume between Ghana and Türkiye is projected to reach US$900 million by the
close of 2025 and cross the US$1 billion mark by 2027. Ghana’s exports to Türkiye
predominantly comprise primary goods such as gold, cocoa beans, cocoa paste, and cocoa butter,
among others. On the other hand, imported products from Türkiye include electrical generating
sets, pasta, cement, insulated wire, clothing, building materials, among others.
