Ghana – Turkey Relations
Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Ghana was established in 1958 following the independence of Ghana. The Turkish Embassy in Accra was first opened in 1964, But closed due to austerity measures in 1981 and re-opened on 1st February 2010. The Embassy of the Republic of Ghana was opened in Ankara in 2012.
The Presidential visits paid by President H.E. Mr. Abdullah Gül on 23-24 March 2011 to Ghana and by former President of the Republic of Ghana H.E. John Dramani Mahama on 21-24 January 2013 to Turkey, paved the way for further strengthening of the bilateral relations between the two countries.
H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Ghana between 29 February and 1 March 2016 created a new milestone in the bilateral relations. During that visit, a Business Forum was held with the participation of 150 Turkish businessmen and their Ghanaian counterparts. Following from that visit, other Government officials including the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Alan Kyeremanten visited Turkey to participate in a business forum.
H.E. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of the Republic Ghana paid an official visit to Turkey between 11-14 January 2020.
Since the establishment of bilateral relations, the two countries have continued to deepen the relations in various areas and sectors including trade and investment among others.
A number of bilateral agreements have been signed to further improve the commercial and economic relations between the two countries.
The two countries have become very good trading partners with a total volume amounting to $ 507.796 million in 2020 alone.
The balance of Trade (BoT) between the two countries has always been in favour of Turkey. However, the Ghana’s exports values to Turkey have seen an increase from the year 2019 to 2020.
